One of the things I love most about shamanic practice is its diversity. Across the world, there are many different traditions and teachings that offer a variety of different ways for us to enter into a deeper relationship with ourselves and the world around us.

I’ve always loved this time of year. Beltane feels like a threshold, or a turning point into something brighter and more alive. It’s my birthday at Beltane too, so perhaps that’s part of it. The sense of beginning again - camping season starts again, longer days, lighter evenings.

In many shamanic traditions, the first journey a beginner makes is to meet a power animal or compassionate helping presence. Some traditions describe this ally as having been with us since birth. Others understand it as a guide who steps forward when we begin to listen deeply. A power animal is a compassionate helper – one that can offer guidance, support, vitality, and perspective as we begin to explore this way of working.

In this blog, I want to explore what happens next. When we journey, our awareness loosens from its usual orientation and begins to travel. To understand that movement, it helps to imagine a vertical structure or axis that links us above and below.
